Afan Valley | Phytophthora Ramorum

The A4107 road takes you from Port Talbot through the Afan valley which is very heavily planted with larch trees. The road continues on to the Bwlch mountain, leading to the Rhondda and Ogmore valley.

There is a dramatic change in the landscape taking place due to an outbreak of an airborne parasitic fungus, Phytophthora Ramorum (P. ramorum). Large areas of forestry is to be cleared in an attempt to combat the disease. A tree infected with P.ramorum loses all its lower branches and is dead within one growing season. The photographs below are part of a body of work that attempts to document the activities of the forestry commission and the effect on the landscape while new trees are planted.
