Today with air travel, sonar and GPS mapping, it can be difficult to imagine the emotions once felt when confronted by the sea. The perils of navigating coupled with the psychological danger of the unseen or unknown has the potential to elicit feelings of fear and anxiety. At the same time these situations could be experienced as opportunity of discovery, adventure and to overcome adversity. The response is defined by an individuals emotional experience as well as their aspirations but it could be argued that the horizon would have been a powerful stimulant to the imagination and the inquisitive mind.
The photographs represent a personal response that forms part of a larger body of work that has explored cultural ideas associated with the sea. The process has been a journey to uncover the features or traits that form the character of the sea which continues to fascinate, captivate as well as inspire.
